License Consulting speaking about licensing Oracle on IBM PSeries

Effective Oracle licensing on Power 7

With evolving technologies, licensing becomes more and more complex. And companies design their IT around technology and not around licensing. There’s nothing wrong with that: However, more often than not the designs result in an unexpectedly high license requirement. Virtualizing Oracle databases is a very known aspect in this regard.

Some systems offer a wide range of implementation methodologies, far beyond virtualization alone. One of them is certainly the IBM P-Series.. Without a doubt, this platform can be both a minefield of compliance risks, as well as maybe the best platform for your money to run Oracle on.

On February 16th the IBM “P-Partners” have been invited by IBM to join a session, during which License Consulting will explain how Oracle should be implemented on PSeries, with the slightest effort, maximum availability while consuming the lowest licensing costs possible.

The IBM P-Series is certainly an complex environment to determine your Oracle license exposure on especially given Oracles insistence that licenses are linked to physical hardware.

The P-Series licensing itself is not without its challenges, hopefully IBM can include a workshop on their PVU model in the context of oracle deployments

(Look forward to a copy of the presentation)

I would appreciate receiving a copy of the presentation. We are an IBM partner and I was wondering if the February 16 presentation will be an invite only event presented online. Any details would be much appreciated as the topic is very relevant for our organization.

    Thank you,

    Hi Jeff,

No problem, you will get it. And yet, it’s upon invitation only. But if you’re willing to fly across the ocean for this, i’m sure they will be happy to have you. There won’t be a webcast. Otherwise we can call sometime so I can explain things further after you’ve seen the slides.

    Let me know,
    Daniel

    Hi,

I would much appreciate a copy of the presentation. Btw, Oracle has published an updated “Partitioning” document last night: (http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/pricing/partitioning-070609.pdf) stating: ”Using IBM processors in TurboCore mode is not permitted as a means to reduce the number of software licenses required; all cores must be licensed.”

    Kindest regards,

    Ronny Frey

Oracle still lags in licensing alternatives for virtualization environments, although with IBM’s partitioning and capping options there are ways to ensure licensing costs won’t increase without control.

I’d love to receive the report.

    Good luck with your presentation

    Samir

I would like a copy of your presentation. Also, do you work with US clients and if so how does this work? It seems like the travel expenses could be more than the consulting costs on a simple environment and license evaluation.

Also, Oracle intimates that licensing will be much better on Sun than other platforms. Is this true? Can they somehow bundle since they now own both the hardware and software?

  13. Daniel Hesselink on March 1st, 2011 11:16 am

I have sent you the presentation by mail.
    As for your other questions:

    1. We work for many international clients, and usually don’t travel to make an analysis for a foreign location (or any location for that matter). If we know the scope of a project and agree upon a deliverable (report with prior agreed output), we run a remote project based upon a fixed price and -where possible- fixed timeline. I’m happy to discuss your case by phone.
    2. Yes, Oracle (sales) intimates that licensing will be much better on Sun: I disagree. If they would make changes that put competitors out of business, a riot amongst vendors would be evident. And questions about anti-competitive behavior would arise. Oracle has nothing to win by doing so. But obviously Oracle wants to sell end-to-end solutions, no question about it. Sales is definitely picking up on this: I’ve seen situations where license compliance claims where waived if only the client would buy Oracle’s server and storage solutions. Many clients are however very resistant in buying into the end-to-end solution, as they already have grudges with Oracle and don’t want to be locked in any more than absolutely necessary.

    Dear Support,

I have purchase Power7 with 8Core Processor, but I have purchase license of Oracle only 4 Processor the question is Oracle allow to install only 2 Core if my database start from now with small transaction?

    Thanks
    Vicheth

  16. Daniel Hesselink on April 7th, 2011 10:24 am

    Hi Vecheth,
    I don’t understand the question

is Oracle allow to install only 2 Core if my database start from now with small transaction

With the information provided, I can only tell you that you should cap the partition for your Oracle databases to a maximum of 4 Cores.
